Carbonell - No Umbrella

Carbonell - No Umbrella
Written and Performed by Justin Janer

don't cover up your little head
listen to the rain as we lay down in bed
no winter coats only bare sleeves
and nothing to hide under when we leave

take off your shoes run down the street
you'll catch a cold if you wear those bare feet
the water's rising to our knees
we'll drown or swim before we ever freeze

go walking with no umbrella
we go walking with no umbrella

two coffee cups to keep us warm
some souvenirs from places full of charm
let's take a picture by the tree
and brush the leaves off that stick to our knees

go walking with no umbrella
we go walking with no umbrella

the rain is tapping on the ground
pretty soon a rainbow will shine all around
puddles reflect what we don't  see
our bodies cold and wet and shivering

go walking with no umbrella
we go walking with no umbrella

we don't need anything
to shelter our feelings

go walking with no umbrella
we go walking with no umbrella

CARBONELL - Warm Hearts

maybe we'll jump through the sky
and breathe the air that is clear
we'll get away for a while
escape the world that we fear

we'll journey off
with only our hearts to keep us warm
I'll hold you near to me so
you don't float away

the stars will shine on your face
as they admire your smile
we'll dance around in the dark
and make this voyage worthwhile

we'll journey off
with only our hearts to keep us warm
I'll hold you near to me
so you don't float away

CARBONELL - You and Me

Here is a new song I wrote and recorded

You and Me

I am you
and you are me
and that is how it's supposed to be
but fear can tear us apart
take us to where we
started back when
you were you and
I was me
we were who we shouldn't be
but we're not afraid any more

only you and always me
lock away your past
hide the key
there won't be enough space in your heart
unless you learn to
start to see what you can only dream
like two stars in the sky
who deny the light
the sun arrives and
shines on every thing

we were
dark and lost
left behind
on the path
toward the light

all I ask of you in return
is be truthful when you say
three words
so short and never ending
long ago they were betrayed
again and again
we walk together
so cautiously slow
drifting away

we weren't meant to be
lonely and guilty

we were
dark and lost
left behind
on the path
toward the light
it shines so bright
by your side

Sweet Dreams

I wrote this song for piano and voice

fill this drink
until I get dizzy again
another night alone

waiting for you
said you'd be coming back soon
oh what an awful lie

sweet dreams
to you

walk down the hall
remembering how you felt small
wearing my arms round you

I loved you and still
I will love you until
your spirit fades away

sweet dreams
to you

Slip and Fall Again

Here's a new song I wrote

slip and fall again
just can't see the end
reaching out to grab your hand
thought you were there
but where are you

I saw you in the crowd
I see you everywhere
your a face that never leaves my memory
but where are you

the mirror in your head
reflecting what she said
sweet reverie of how it is
not how it was
or could have been

you never said a word
I told you everything
wish I could take it back and throw it all away
it wasn't true

cause I never knew you at all
your bitter words are all I recall
cause I never knew you at all

but where are you
still where are you

Review

Here's a review of a recent gig I did at Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood CA.  The writer said I was "playing tastefully throughout on alto and tenor saxophones and flute"  :)

Here is the link to the review

St. Lucia!

I had the amazing privilege of performing as a special guest with an incredible band called St. Lucia.  We did two shows, one at Bardot and another at The Echo in Los Angeles.  Here's some clips

Carbonell - All I Know

I wrote this new song about seasonal changes; a metaphor for life.  It's also about how when you really care about someone a lot of other factors don't matter.  All that matters is the way you feel.

in the cool wind
of late june
i sit waiting for your call
by the wind chimes
you once left here
i think of you each time they move

all i know is i care for you
all i know is i care for you

thinking of friends
forgetting them
it's so hard to keep track these days
felt like floating
now i'm anchored
tied in knots but i'm getting loose

all i know is i care for you
all i know is i care for you

the gloom of yesterday will fade away
nothing much to do and less to say
i just can't help thinking about your smile
as i listen to the sound on windy days

she's been hiding
in the shadows
always near but never close
secret places
laughing faces
i tell you things no one else will know

all i know is i care for you
all i know is i care for you

the gloom of yesterday will fade away
nothing much to do and less to say
i just can't help thinking about your smile
as i listen to the sound on windy days

Cool Restuarant Gig

I played a gig the other day with some very fine young players: Devin Norris - Piano, Jay Johnson - Bass, and Albert Law - Drums.  We were playing at Il Lido Di Manhattan.  Here's a sample of us playing one of my favorite tunes called Stella by Starlight.

More Hats

I saw this clip of Chris Del Moro wearing a cool beanie, so I decided to copy the design.  Double crochet with spaces in between.  It took me forever to figure out how to make it seamless, but I finally got it!  Yes!  Check out this vid

Jazz Music Gig

Here are a few recordings from a recent gig I did.  I wanted to experiment with different camera angles, so I put my flip video camera down by my feet.  Check it out!  This was a from a CD release party at The Steel Pit in Tujunga CA yesterday with a band I play in called "The Happiness Jazz Band".

Super 8

Just got this crazy Super 8 Video Camera.  I broke my Canon 310XL and have been on a quest to find a replacement for quite a while.  This is a Carena CXL -250.  It's pretty heavy duty!

Camera

Found this vintage Canon Autoboy at a Goodwill today.  Noisy!

Elephant Beanie

Made this one for a friend today.  I based the colors off of this super rad elephant wind-chime from Thailand.

Ms. Connection

I wrote this song about missed connections and the negative consequences of casual intimate relationships.  Many different kinds of musical influences were used in the creation of this piece.  On this song I used some interesting sounds such as electrified Jew's Harp and distorted speaker cable noise.

you swept me off my feet
as I was standing in your path
did I catch you looking my way
those eyes were painted black and white
something about the way you moved
so slowly I knew you were wild inside

hello ms. connection
come on back my way
silent stipulation
let's go all the way

I saw you on the street and waved
somehow we arrived at this place
your body shimmering and smooth
salty and dripping wet for me
I knew that you had thoughts like mine
tell me about what's in your mind

hello ms. connection
come on back my way
silent stipulation
let's go all the way

but will this go anywhere
pretend I don't really care about you
and will we ever be the same

Carbonell Live - By The Seaside

I played at a house party on Cinco de Mayo.  Here is a video of a new song I wrote called "By the Seaside".

Invitation

I was practicing for a gig today and recorded this.  One of my favorite jazz tunes - Invitation.  I guess you could say this is inspired by the style of Lee Konitz mixed with Brian Eno.

Pretty Words

I just wanted to write a pretty song. I remember sitting down at my favorite coffee shop called Neighborhood Grinds in Redondo Beach CA and having total writers block. I got tired of writing songs about serious events and people or stories, etc. I just wanted to write a song with like pretty words or something. Anyway... later I sat down and felt inspired to simplify everything completely. I recorded some flute and clarinet on here for that airy feel.

Pretty words are all I have to say
words like springtime and roses in full bloom
bright fluffy clouds
the sun all around
and children are waving hello

Pretty words are all I have for you
words like cherry trees and perfume in the breeze
a smile on your face
a gentle embrace
and watching the birds fly away

It's kind of more like a children's song or something which I think is pretty cool.

*That cool chord you may have noticed is an F Aug Maj 7 #9.  One of those colorful harmonic major scale chords :)

Video Camera Video Camera

My new awesomeness! Canon 310XL Super 8mm Video Camera. I bought this camera for a steal at a Salvation Army that I often frequent and added a Neutral Density Filter and a Wide Angle Lens. I loaded it with 50 ft of Kodak Vision 3 500T Color Negative film that I purchased online directly from Kodak. I have been filming mostly ocean and nature scenes and still shots. I'm still in the market for a projector.  That's a lemon by the way.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Finished this one yesterday. Great buildup and super exciting expedition! The book was falling apart by the end.

Crazy Striped Hat!

This is by far the most creative hat I've ever made. It's super long, like "Dopey" from Snow White. This one took a lot of hard work with all the color switches. I crocheted this one outside too, by the beach which was nice.

Blue and Yellow Striped Hat

Single-strand double crochet hat. Cool and lighter for those hotter days.

Dings

Got a couple minor dings from surfing too crazy these days. Knee-paddling blisters on the feet. Those gashed on my arm and leg were through the wetsuit! Oh yeah, my board hit me in the face. Fun stuff.

Necklace

I made this necklace thing out of bottle caps from my favorite beer... Anchor Steam!

Salvation Mountain

Hi. I went to Salvation Mountain. Here are some pictures. If you've read the book "Into The Wild" you might know about this place and nearby Slab City.

Matching Hats

I made two matching hats in an opposite style. Primary colors! Wanted to go with a two-tone vibe on these.
